We are told to set our goals or we will never achieve anything. We are constantly asked (or ask of others) ‘What do you want to achieve in life? How will you achieve this? You must set goals.’ Honestly, all I want to achieve is living a life that is physically comfortable, have regular contact and interact with people who do not make me feel tired and to pursue activities that are creative and help me feel great. Is this selfish? I don’t think so. Happiness is contagious and spreads like a virus in the blink of an eye. If we take the time to really look at what makes us happy, I believe that we would all find similar thoughts.
What are goals? In my opinion……an overused concept in the context in which is being used. We so often hear ‘what are your goals for the year?’ ‘if you don’t set goals, you won’t achieve anything’ and so on. The origin of the word ‘goal’ is unclear but seems to have had a meaning relating to some kind of barrier. Are we creating a future that we can never achieve because of the terminology we are using? If we believe that we reap what we sow, then yes, because we are sowing barriers and thus are reaping barriers.
How can we change this? Change our terminology! Let’s start by changing ‘goals’ to ‘hopes’ – a word whose earliest meaning is more suitable to creating a positive future. The original meaning of the word 'hope' seems to be ‘confidence in the future’ or ‘expectation of something desired’. Those who believe themselves to be productivity gurus will scoff at this idea as the term ‘set hopes’ does not currently have the cachet that ‘set goals’ has. They would say that it is too wishy-washy. I disagree. I believe the words we use in our heads, hearts and mouths determine our future.
Some days are just a kick in the pants – and that sucks! However, I truly believe that we have the ability to hope for a reason, and that is simply to live life in a way that our hopes have the potential to be fulfilled. What are your HOPES for 2018? Just this little change in the words you use may make all the difference to the outcome and see you reaching heights you have only ever dreamed of.
