What makes a criminal…..a criminal? Female polygraphist Silke Kaiser has written a book about her journey through the world of crime in South Africa.
Lack of a strong father figure is one of the major contributors to crime in the world today and this author is very vocal on this fact. Poverty, which is commonly thought to be a motivating factor, actually falls lower on the list. Most crime is committed with inside information – this means that your employees (or family members) are involved.

Accomplices are often brought into crime through a phenomenon known as ‘trauma bonding’ and regrettably, this most often occurs with women.
Farm attacks are not a spontaneous event. They are well-planned with weeks of observation and planning. Guns, jewelry and money are what the criminals are looking for. Remember that when you are on the wrong side of a gun, the only thing you need to know is that you are powerless. The only response is cooperation. Assume that the criminals have already been in your home, so do not deny ownership of items they ask for.

The skill lies within the examiner. Although Ms Kaiser has become an expert in body language, the only result she will give the client is the one from her equipment. A polygraph test cannot be used to fire an employee but will be taken into consideration by the CCMA and SAPS. However, in the case of crime in a company, the employee will often rather resign than face arrest.
The audience was completely enthralled by this incredible lady, as was I.
