I was introduced to a quiet, petite and slender lady who appeared calm and unfazed. However, listening to her story, I discovered that there was much, much more bubbling under the surface.
Her husband Stuart was the MC for the evening and announced the Twitter hashtag: #avoidingburnout and introduced the lady of the hour.
Success follows happiness; it is not the other way around, which is what we are taught growing up. This is the most important lesson that this author wants people to hear. Through this journey, she has had to build a new life. Ms Mann said that she was very honest and vulnerable in the writing of the book and felt exposed when the book was published.

Ms Mann said that this experience has given her an opportunity to reassess her life. By not listening to the constant clues telling her that her life was broken, a huge message was required. She has discovered that from stress, she developed an autoimmune disease of the thyroid (amongst other issues). This resulted in her not being able to do much for two years - even collecting mulberry leaves for the children’s silkworms ended up with her needing to rest for several hours.
During this period, a realisation that her life needed rebuilding was reached. Many, many books on positive psychology and related topics led her to test the theories presented. The theories that worked were kept and the ones that didn’t, discarded. In the process of healing much of her life has changed. Out of all of this the Seven Principles of Self Preservation were born. Through stories of how people learn, others can benefit. Remember that burnout happens to achievers – people who are goal setters, not slackers. Expressing gratitude now forms a permanent part of her daily routine along with creativity, healthy eating and exercise.
What does the future hold for this incredible lady? A deck of cards called Reminders for the Seven

Principles of Self Preservation to accompany the book is being developed along with a follow up up book called Healing Burnout; workshops, webinars and many other exciting things.
Always remember: Success follows happiness – it is not the other way around

About the book:
K.A. Mann had it all. She was a mother and wife, an ultra- marathon runner and a business owner. But the stress of doing the wrong work in an unpleasant environment landed her with a lifelong autoimmune illness. Without work and income, she took stock of how it happened and how she could have prevented her burnout. Kathy developed the seven principles of self-preservation. The principles cover relationship issues such as the importance of boundaries; knowing yourself and injecting creativity into your life – all in order to create a richer, more rewarding life and to connect with what matters most to you. In this heartfelt and personal account, she provides great insight into the factors affecting our stress levels. Accompanied by personal stories and backed up by research, Kathy provides opportunities for us to evaluate our lives and to design a life more aligned to our authentic selves. If you’re suffering from stress, this book could help you avoid burnout and change the trajectory of your life. “This is a book of triumph and grace that follows when one has suffered deeply and endured crises of such magnitude that our hearts and minds are literally cracked open and we recognise a power beyond ourselves that is always present.” Meryl Abrahams, Professional Specialised Kinesiologist
