Entry to this event was the donation of a book for the Signature Library in Soweto. Adam Rabinowitz and his daughter musically entertained guests as they arrived.
Jacques Velleman tried to chat with this outgoing gentleman but had trouble getting a word in! However, here are some of the highlights from the evening (aside from a full, dropped Mofaya can of course!). If you watch the video on Facebook on the Business Book Club page, you will notice that DJ Sbu constantly has a can of Mofaya in his hand.
Worked in radio after trying for a long time to enter the industry. Maturing has seen him turn to new business ventures. This book is based on his own (ad)ventures because the ‘construction’ part is not as easy as you might think! The problem in general seems to be that people are not thinking big – and you need this mindset as an entrepreneur.
His opinion is that many people are forced into entrepreneurship by the circumstance of not being able to find a job. You do not need lots of money to start a business – you just need to do it!
Although Mofaya is his current focus, there is more to do. Mofaya is launching different flavours in the new year along with a vodka based beverage range. This has come about by bartering services. Mistakes have been made along the way – R3 000 000,00 stock had to be destroyed because their contract manufacturer put the SABS mark on stock when it was not approved (no energy drinks in South Africa carry the mark). You cannot have an ego and may need to humble yourself on your journey – embrace it. The Mofaya has an informal distribution market. Anyone can buy the product at a wholesaler and resell in their communities. This is encouraged to enable the unemployed to create their own markets and money.
MassivMetro is an online radio show created because of the difficulty of obtaining a licence – another venture started by this enthusiastic man.
DJ Sbu considers himself as a walking case study – everyone around him can learn how he sells just by watching him do it. He has set himself a challenge to release a book a year because he wants to share the knowledge gained during his journey.
This was such an entertaining evening and I know that this entrepreneur is going to build an empire in the coming years.

About the book:
DJ Sbu is not your ordinary entrepreneur. He was born to be great and refuses to settle for less. Have you ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a successful entrepreneur? How they come up with their ground-breaking ideas, how they turn them into flourishing businesses, how they deal with failure, and what drives and motivates them? Billionaires Under Construction answers these questions, and more, as it charts the rise and rise of Sbusiso Leope, one Africa’s most dynamic entrepreneurs. From his childhood in Tembisa to the global stage as a world-class musician and DJ, from music mogul and co-owner of TS Records – the label behind some of South Africa’s brightest young stars – and, more recently, as the force behind the country’s first black-owned energy drink, Sbu’s story is one of courage, resilience, inspiration and a refusal to let failure stop him. In his own words, you just can’t stop his go. Billionaires Under Construction is a blueprint of Sbu’s success; an honest and direct account of the setbacks he’s encountered, including his high profile dismissal from two of South Africa’s most prominent radio stations and his equally notorious run-in with Forbes magazine. The way in which Sbu handles adversity reveals the triumph of his entrepreneurial spirit and the tenacity of a man who does, indeed, consider himself a billionaire under construction – and he won’t stop until his goal has become a reality. So, if you have aspirations to join the Billionaire Generation, there is no better starting point than reading this book.
