I’m sitting quietly, mulling over the complexity of this story – and its shattering end. It has been a wild, wild ride with Jane Yellowrock meeting and battling the wolf- and cat-weres who have been estranged from the vampires for many years. Aside from the weres, we are introduced to the ‘Mercy Blade’, whose job it is to kill insane vampires, whilst assisting those who are affected by these deaths.
Although this is a thrilling mystery (Jane is a PI afterall!), I found this story a little overwhelming in its complexity and believe that I will have to listen to it again to fully appreciate all the intricate details of the plot. This has not reduced my enjoyment of the overall story however, as the characters are interesting (I do so love the humble taxi-driver!) and we get to discover some more of Jane’s lost memories. There is plenty of action and adventure, with lots of emotion and even some humour. I am enjoying Jane’s relationship with ‘Beast’, for although they have been together for many years, it feels like they are just getting to know each other.
For me the ending was not the only cliff-hanger! I look forward to being able to see how the ‘Mercy Blade’ fits back into the vampire community in New Orleans after his long absence and if we will be hearing more of the weres. The witches were plotting in this book and I hope that future tales will resolve this thread. This story is followed by Raven Cursed (Jane Yellowrock #4).
Once again Khristine Hvam has given a sterling performance and the editors of this production ensured that the recording was top-notch. Although each of the books can be listened to as a stand-alone novel, I highly recommend following the series. This is a wonderful choice for fans of the paranormal/fantasy/mystery genres.
